We Made It!!!!

Friday July 5th

WE MADE IT !!!!!

We slept in again and there is something to say about getting caught up on our sleep. Wade and Sara, especially Sara, has had a hard time getting adjusted to the time change, not sleeping on the plane didn't help either, and just being on the go has finally caught up.  We went to find a little something to eat since we were still kind of full from the big clam bake the night before,  Then Tommy picked us up and we were off to the big city of New York.

We parked the car, then started straight to the place we were having lunch.  It was Churrascaria Plataforma, a Brazilian restaurant, and it was wonderful.  Then we headed out to shop and see the sights.

Our first stop was to take a picture of us in Times Square, the starting place of the East tour of the Lincoln Highway, and our goal to end our trip from the west.

We had made it, our goal of driving across country from the west coast to the east coast!  Time to celebrate, time to shop!!!!

We walked several blocks and could not believe the amount of people, how tiny the streets are and how bright the signs were.

We even got  pictures of some fun characters

After doing quite a bit of shopping, we finally arrived at our next destination.

YES! It was finally time to go the  Winter Garden to see a Broadway production!  One of my favorite movies was Mamma Mia!  And now we were going to see it on Broadway.  This theater is beautiful, and the pictures don't do it justice.

And the production didn't disappoint us. It was wonderful.

As we were walking to the parking garage, we took a few pictures of Times Square at night. Beautiful!

Actually, this one was taken earlier

Then we drove to the site of the old twin towers and got this wonderful photo of the Freedom Tower

Spectacular!!!

And this ended our wonderful day in New York.  We arrived back to our hotel about 2 am, and that is why this post is being put on the blog today!

We sure hope you enjoyed your trip with us. If there is anything you get from this blog and trip is hopefully the desire to get out and see AMERICA,  because our great country ROCKS!!

Sincerely, your weary travelers

Vaughn and Nelda

A little better than boring!

Day 11

A little better than boring!

I'm apologizing for not getting this post in earlier.  Last night was a really late night and this morning we had Internet problems.  So this is for yesterday and today.  Hope you enjoy.

So we left Canton bright and early and found our way back on the Lincoln Highway.  We took a scenic by way in Robertsville Ohio and went across several miles of brick road.  I thought it was awesome and Vaughn thought it sucked because it was really uneven and bumpy!

Then we found ourselves in the cute little town of Minerva Ohio.  This gas station had a perfect advertisement

And all down the street were these signs

Then we eventually made it into West Virginia and the picture sucks because once again I had to take the picture from the front seat and of course there was a lot of traffic behind us so we couldn't slow down.

Now in West Virginia there are only 5 miles of Lincoln Highway. And not one thing to take a picture of.  In fact we were out of there so fast I thought we had missed it!

When we crossed over into Pennsylvania, we saw these boats on the Ohio River.

Then  the road took us to this town and I loved the arch.

After following the Lincoln Highway for a while and hitting lots of traffic and not seeing much to take pictures of, we decided to head north to the place we were going to stay.  We knew we couldn't go anywhere near Gettysburg, since it is the 150th anniversary of the civil war and they are having a lot of activities there.

Soon we arrived in Hawley Pa. where Vaughn has a friend, Tommy Knoblick, from work and they have a cabin here.  So this is where we will be staying for the next 3 days.  The rooms are a kick back from the 60's or so, and they remind me of my days cleaning the good old Moore Motel.

So we went to bed and Tommy picked Vaughn up at 3 am to go to the Newark airport to pick up Wade and Sara who had taken the red eye from Salt Lake to stay with us.  Today has been a lazy day and tonight we went to Tommy's cabin and had a clam bake.  Talk about a wonderful BIG meal.  So now we are back at the Tuck-em Inn and getting our rest so tomorrow we can go see Times Square in New York.

Stay tuned!

A Boring Day

Day 10

Clinton Iowa to Canton Ohio

So, obviously we didn't make it to Pittsburgh.  Wow such a long day and a long drive.  And it was a boring, yes I said BORING drive.  In Iowa there was so many things to see.  In Illinois, there was nothing except the Lincoln Highway signs.  While we were leaving Clinton, we saw their neat signs

We also crossed over the Mississippi River. It was a quick picture because Vaughn had a semi coming up on his butt, so this was the best I could do

This was a cute little town we went through in Illinois.  The shops were beautiful looking and just had a fun country look

We saw a lot of LH signs, and since things weren't going the way I wanted, I decided to take pictures of them so there would be something on the blog today.

This one was on a bridge, one of these on each side, and I was caught unprepared, and I almost missed it!!

We went through an area in Indiana, that had alot of windmills.  They look beautiful, since the wind was really blowing, a storm was on its way in.

Then in Ohio it started to pour.  I even found myself watching the black clouds hoping not to see a funnel cloud.

Then I found Vaughns next project!  He didn't think so.  But it was for SALE!!!!

And then we found something that looked quite strange. In fact we found a couple of these

Cemeteries out in the middle of the fields.  Just right smack in the middle.  Strange.

And to end our boring day, a calm at the end of the storm.  But it really wasn't, we had more rain.

And so I apologize, this isn't such a fun post.  Lets hope tomorrow brings more interesting things.  We will be going through the rest of Ohio and Pennsylvania, stopping in Hawley PA, as we are staying for a few days with a friend of Vaughn's.  But keep tuned in, we ARE going to New York!

We drove about 550 miles, and it took forever.

Day 9

Day 9

Kearney, Nebraska to Clinton, Iowa

This morning was really different.  When we went downstairs to breakfast in our hotel, there were only a few of our friends that was on the tour with us.  Thank goodness we didn't see any of the real close ones because I didn't know if I could say good bye to them again.

We were headed east and a guy who was a passenger with another man whose car broke down earlier on our tour, needed a ride to Omaha, so we piled him and his gear into our backseat and took off.

We found this cute little gas station on the way out of town

This is the history of ownership

And the man who owns it now

And of course the Lincoln Highway marker

Further down the road was another very fun station.  We drove all the way around it and loved every side.

Notice the people on the side

Soon we arrived in Omaha and dropped off our passenger.  It was his cousins home, and of course we had to check out the Mustang

Then we started out across Iowa.  Let me tell ya, I know they DID NOT miss the cornfield that Kevin Costner plowed under for the baseball field!  Miles and miles of corn fields. Then we caught sight of this crop duster

It was pretty hard to catch him through the windshield

These are pictures of some buildings we saw along the LH

This is where we ate dinner. It opened in 1936 for travelers along the LH

This bridge is in Tama Iowa
(The café above is also in Tama, not far from this bridge)

This is another old gas station along Route 30
also known as Lincoln Highway

This was another diner, but only open on certain days

And of course, I finally got a shot of a real "barn quilt"

Then we saw this awesome, totally fantastic painting on a barn.  We had to go back and take a picture of it

Somebody has real talent !

Today we drove 570 miles, in about 13 hours.  We are tired, but don't feel as tired as when we were traveling with the group. Go figure !

Tomorrow our goal is to drive to Pittsburgh. Get your rest!
